The Board of Directors of the Nicos Poulantzas Institute is honoured to announce the appointment of French philosopher Étienne Balibar as an Honorary Member.
This is in recognition of the great thinker’s international scholarly contributions, as well as his unwavering support for the democratic struggles in Greece. Furthermore, it solidifies his strong ties to Nicos Poulantzas and to his body of work, within the framework of a shared Marxist theoretical tradition.
In an international conjuncture marked by wars, widespread violence, insecurity, and the rise of authoritarian governments, on the one hand, and the intensifying class struggles on the other, this collaboration takes on a particular significance in view of the fight for Equaliberty (equality-freedom) and the pursuit of contemporary emancipatory responses.
In accepting this invitation, Étienne Balibar stressed that the memory and the legacy of Nicos Poulantzas’ thinking are for him of fundamental importance. He expressed his clear desire for his participation to be more than honorary. He wishes to actively contribute to the exchange of ideas, as well as to the project of establishing an archive and producing a critical republication of Nicos Poulantzas’ work.
The Nicos Poulantzas Institute warmly welcomes Étienne Balibar and looks forward to a fruitful and creative collaboration.

Le Conseil d’administration de l’Institut Nicos Poulantzas a le profond honneur d’annoncer la nomination du philosophe français Étienne Balibar au titre de membre d’honneur.
Cette décision vient saluer la contribution scientifique internationale de ce grand penseur, mais aussi son engagement constant aux côtés des luttes démocratiques en Grèce. Elle vient par ailleurs sceller ses liens étroits avec Nicos Poulantzas et son œuvre, dans le cadre d’une tradition théorique marxiste commune.
Dans un contexte international marqué par les guerres, la violence généralisée, l’insécurité, la montée des gouvernements autoritaires et, parallèlement, par une intensification porteuse d’espoir des luttes de classe, cette collaboration revêt une importance particulière pour la défense de l’égaliberté et la recherche de réponses émancipatrices adaptées aux enjeux contemporains.
En acceptant cette invitation, Étienne Balibar a souligné que la mémoire et l’empreinte de la pensée de Nicos Poulantzas restaient pour lui une référence fondamentale. Il a exprimé le souhait explicite que sa participation ne soit pas seulement honorifique, mais qu’elle revête un contenu substantiel grâce à sa contribution active aux échanges d’idées, ainsi qu’au projet de constitution des archives et de réédition critique de l’œuvre de Nicos Poulantzas.
L’Institut Nicos Poulantzas accueille avec enthousiasme Étienne Balibar et se réjouit à la perspective d’une collaboration scientifique fructueuse et créative.
