He studied law and social sciences in Athens, Heidelberg and Paris, where he settled in 1961. Until his suicide in October 1979, he was Professor of Sociology at the 8th University of Paris and Director of Studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. He became world-renowned for his theoretical contributions to the analysis of the capitalist state, the state of emergency (fascism, fascist dictatorships), social classes, power relations and socialist strategy. According to the well-known sociologist and political scientist Bob Jessop, Poulantzas was the most important Marxist theorist of the state of the post-war period.

In addition to his work, which was widely distributed in many countries and especially in Latin America, Poulantzas was actively involved in the left and communist movement in France and Greece (member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and, after 1968, of the KKE Esoterikou), constituting with his stance a shining example of an organic left-wing intellectual.

His books are in circulation in Greece: Social Classes in Modern Capitalism, Political Power and Social Classes, For Gramsci: Between Sartre and Althusser, The State, Power, Socialism, Fascism and Dictatorship, Problems of the Modern State and the Fascist Phenomenon (together with R. Miliband and Z.-P. Fay), The Crisis of Dictatorships: Portugal, Greece, Spain.

Documentary about the life and work of Nikos Poulantzas from the digital archive of ERT

WORK

PRIMARY BIBLIOGRAPHY

Πουλαντζάς Νίκος Α.
