Pournaras Library\, 2nd Floor\, Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA)\, 20 Akadimias St. \nThe Nikos Poulantzas Institute and the ENA Institute are co-organising a conference entitled “What Could Be the Substance of a Progressive Constitution?” — an initiative that seeks to place at the centre of public debate the broader discussion on constitutional revision and the challenges facing Greek democracy today. \nThe event takes place at a moment when the widespread erosion of institutions and democratic norms has already assumed the character of a profound constitutional and political challenge. The institutional reconstruction of the Greek state — including constitutional revision where necessary — is emerging as a major political priority. With the participation of academics\, legal scholars and researchers\, the conference aims to highlight the key issues that should shape a modern progressive constitutional\, and more broadly institutional\, framework. \nDetailed Programme\nPanel 1: Protecting Public Goods – The Commons Economy – Inequalities\n5:00–6:15 p.m. \nChair: Nikos Papadimitriou \nThe first panel focuses on one of the most pressing issues of our time: the degradation of public goods — healthcare\, education\, public space\, the environment\, housing and drinking water — and their gradual transformation into objects of private profit-making\, exacerbating social inequalities. Participants will address the following central question: what institutional\, legislative or even constitutional measures could halt this trend? \nSpeakers: \n\nGeorgia Kaplanoglou\nDora Kotsaka\nAlexandros Sarivalasis\nChristoforos Skamnakis\n\n\nPanel 2: Rule of Law\, Democracy and Rights\n6:20–7:45 p.m. \nChair: Dora Anagnostopoulou \nThe second panel opens the discussion on the major issues concerning the protection and strengthening of democracy and the rule of law. At the heart of the debate lies the question: which issues require strong institutional intervention\, whether through legislation or through constitutional revision? \nSpeakers: \n\nGiannis Drosos\nIfigeneia Kamtsidou\nChristos Rammos\nGiorgos Sotirelis\n\n\nPanel 3: The Challenges of Our Time\n8:00–9:00 p.m. \nChair: Giannis Albanis \nThe third and final panel turns to the defining challenges of our era: digital transformation and climate change. The central question concerns the institutional responses required in the face of the disruptions brought about by digitalisation and the climate crisis — issues that are increasingly emerging as critical fields of constitutional regulation. \nSpeakers: \n\nNikos Erinakis\nGiorgos Mpallias\nLina Papadopoulou\nVasiliki Christou\n\n\nThis joint initiative reflects the shared commitment of both institutes to the deepening of democracy and the development of a comprehensive progressive approach to constitutional issues.

DESCRIPTION:Tribute Event in Honour of Nicos Mouzelis \n Monday\, 18 May\n 18:00 – 21:00\n National Gallery Auditorium – 50 Vassileos Konstantinou Ave.\, Athens \nThe Nicos Poulantzas Institute is organising a tribute event in honour of Nicos Mouzelis on Monday\, 18 May\, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.\, at the Auditorium of the National Gallery in Athens. \nThe event will open with introductory remarks by Antonis Liakos\, Emeritus Professor of Modern History at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. \nThe programme will feature contributions by distinguished academics and public intellectuals: \n\nLina Papadopoulou\, Professor of Constitutional Law\, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki\nEfthymios Papataxiarchis\, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology\, University of the Aegean\nMaria Repoussi\, Historian\, former Professor of History Education at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Director of the Nicos Poulantzas Institute\nMarilena Simiti\, Professor of Political Sociology\, University of Piraeus\nDimitris Sotiropoulos\, Professor of Political Science at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and President of the Hellenic Political Science Association\nLoukas Tsoukalis\, Professor at Sciences Po Paris and Emeritus Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens\nNikos Fotopoulos\, Professor of Sociology at the University of the Peloponnese\n\nThe speakers will reflect on the multifaceted work of Nicos Mouzelis and his engagement with different currents of social and political thought. The discussion will highlight his contribution to sociological theory and the study of modernisation\, as well as his interventions in debates on democracy and civil society. \nParticular emphasis will also be placed on his participation in collective initiatives and public interventions\, including ELEMEP\, Paremvasi\, the GSEE Labour Academy and Gefyra — initiatives that demonstrate his active involvement in Greece’s public and political life. \nThe event will also feature the screening of a documentary video including excerpts from Mouzelis’s work\, archival material from interviews and public talks\, and original testimonies.
