According to the research\, they face five critical challenges on a daily basis: \n\n\nSevere and continuously rising cost of living \n\n\nWork that does not provide sufficient income for a decent life \n\n\nHousing crisis \n\n\nLack of quality free time \n\n\nIncreasing sense of social isolation \n\n\n\nThe Numbers Reveal\n\n\n17% work with temporary contracts or without a contract \n\n\n92% believe wages are too low \n\n\n65% receive financial support from their families \n\n\n44% say they are little or not at all satisfied with their lives \n\n\nOnly 31% believe the future will be positive \n\n\n\nA Paradoxical Maturity\nYoung people are forced to mature and become more cynical than their parents were at the same age. At the same time\, however\, they cannot truly enter adulthood: they lack stable employment\, cannot afford independent housing\, and struggle to believe in a better future. \n\nThe Demystification of Europe\nDespite pessimism about Greece\, 61% say they prefer to remain in the country. \nYoung people’s perception of Europe has changed dramatically. Europe is no longer viewed as a dream but rather as a last resort. Many express concerns about: \n\n\nRacism and anti-immigration policies \n\n\nThe threat of war \n\n\nSocial alienation and loss of identity \n\n\n\nPolitical Awareness\nFor young people with left-wing political beliefs\, politics concerns all aspects of society and everyday life. \nFor those leaning towards the right\, politics is mainly associated with the state\, political parties and institutions. \n\nWhy Is This Discussion Important?\nThe research portrays a generation in crisis — not only economically\, but also socially and existentially. \nYoung people increasingly feel that they are “neither children nor adults.” The present appears uncertain\, the future unclear\, and many dreams are postponed or abandoned. \nThe discussion will explore the representations\, patterns and limits of youth culture and politicization\, examining how the political consciousness of the younger generation is shaped under conditions of systemic crisis and insecurity. \n\nKey Themes of the Discussion\nThe event will focus on five main themes that emerged from the research: \nRights – The struggle for basic labour and social rights \nTime – Lack of personal time and the feeling of a “stolen life” \nWork – Precarious employment\, low wages and lack of prospects \nCost of Living – Continuous economic pressure and inability to plan ahead \nHousing – The increasingly unattainable dream of independence and autonomy \n\nCo-organized by\nThe Left in the European ParliamentNikos Poulantzas Institute \n\nInformation – Contact\nFor more information: \n📧 info@poulantzas.gr📞 +30 210 3217 745

DESCRIPTION:Parallel Event: “Arts in Education”\nAs part of the exhibition “Blind Spot: Sea Routes and Migration Flows”\, the Nikos Poulantzas Institute is organising the event “Arts in Education” on Friday\, 6 February (18:00–21:00) at the Athens Municipality Arts Centre. \nAim and Theme\nThe event “Arts in Education” seeks to highlight the role of the arts as a crucial pedagogical and epistemic field within today’s educational environment. In a time of intense social\, technological\, and cultural transformations\, the arts should not be treated as a supplementary or marginal activity\, but rather as an essential tool for understanding the world\, cultivating critical thinking\, fostering empathy\, and encouraging democratic participation. \nThe event is part of the exhibition “Blind Spot” and engages with its central questions of visibility and invisibility\, movement\, borders\, and the narratives that shape contemporary experience. Within this context\, arts in education are approached as methodological and aesthetic tools that render visible the “blind spots” of school knowledge\, enabling the re-examination of established historical\, social\, and cultural narratives. \nDiscussion Focus\nThe event explores the ways in which different art forms—theatre\, digital drama\, cinema\, visual arts\, and museum practices—can be creatively integrated into educational processes\, contributing to the development of a school environment open to dialogue\, experiential learning\, and inclusion. Goethe-Institut Auditorium\, 14-16 Omirou St.\, Athens. \n\nEduardo Cantava \n  \nProfessor of American Literature & Philip Mayhew Chair\, Princeton University. \n  \nLearning to Read History: Fazal Sheikh’s Erasure Trilogy \nThe Nikos Poulantzas Institute is organizing the 18th Annual Nikos Poulantzas Memorial Lecture\, on Friday\, December 19\, at 7:00 PM\, at the Goethe-Institut Auditorium (14-16 Omirou St.\, Athens). \nThe keynote speaker is Eduardo Cadava\, Professor of American Literature and Philip Mayhew Chair at Princeton University. \nTopic of the lecture \nTitle: “Learning to Read History: Fazal Sheikh’s Erasure Trilogy” \n  \nThe lecture is based on Fazal Sheikh’s multi-volume photographic work\, Erasure Trilogy (2015). The focus is on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli side’s ongoing effort to erase both the violence it perpetrates and the acts of erasure themselves. \nBy exploring the legacy of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War\, Eduardo Candava highlights the mechanisms of this “double erasure” and the possibilities of resistance to it. Drawing on theoretical and literary texts by Walter Benjamin\, Mahmoud Darwish\, Jacques Derrida\, Judith Butler\, and Eyal Weizmann\, the speaker argues that the Erasure Trilogy functions as a training manual for how to read history in times of danger; a crucial tool for understanding\, analyzing\, and resisting the ongoing genocide in Gaza. \nSpeaker: Eduardo Candava \nEduardo Candava is Professor of American Literature and Philip Mayhew Chair at Princeton University. He collaborates\, among others\, with the Department of Comparative Literature\, the School of Architecture\, the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies\, and the University’s Institute for International and Regional Studies. \nHis work spans American literature and culture\, the theory and history of photography\, comparative literature\, political theory and philosophy\, media technologies\, and translation theory.
